What are the risks of Breast Cancer?

Your risks of developing breast cancer may increase if:

  • You have relatives with breast, ovarian or other types of cancer.
  • Breast cancer occurs before age 50 in a relative (mother, sister, grandmother or aunt) on either side of the family. The risk is higher if your mother or sister has a history of breast cancer.
  • You have a male relative (or relatives) with breast cancer
  • Women who started menstruating before age 12 or had late menopause (after 55)

Signs of Breast Cancer include:

  • Swelling or a lump in the breast
  • An ache or uncomfortably feeling in the breast
  • One breast that looks different than the other
  • Breast skin that is dimpled or pitted
  • A nipple that looks as though it had been pushed in
  • Bleeding from the nipple

In advanced breast cancer you may also experience:

  • Swollen lymph nodes under your arm
  • Bone or back pain
  • Difficulty breathing
